Study Zone Plus

Study Zone Plus offers students in grades K-12 all these services in one place:

  • Free homework help
  • Access to KCLS librarians
  • Language and reading support
  • Social activities

Students in grades K-12 can log in any time during Study Zone Plus open hours. Students will be moved to breakout rooms by age groups, elementary or teen.

During high traffic, students will be muted and asked to put their request in Chat.

Connect to Zoom using your computer, tablet or smartphone. Or, dial in using a home phone or smartphone.

When a student connects to Study Zone Plus, they will be on hold in the Zoom waiting room.

A greeter will admit students into the Zoom lobby. Students will be asked what services they need and then moved to the breakout room that fits their needs. Students can be moved to different rooms to use one or more services during each session.

KCLS librarians and volunteer Rovers monitor the breakout rooms. Participants who do not follow the Terms of Use Agreement will be moved out of the breakout rooms, and may be blocked from accessing future Study Zone Plus sessions.

Help keep Study Zone Plus a safe and positive space for academic support!

  • Do not share personal information (email/phone number, home address, school, etc).
  • User names should be anonymous, respectful and positive.
  • Think about what is displayed in the background of your Zoom video. Can you see identifiable signs or buildings, pictures or other people and rooms that should remain private?
  • Do not agree to meet other students or volunteers outside of Study Zone Plus, either online or in real life.
  • Tell a rover, greeter or librarian if something makes you uncomfortable during Study Zone Plus.

Tutors and Students will:

  • Be respectful. Be kind. Be safe.
  • Take turns working with the tutor.
  • Be patient and use positive comments.
  • Model the same online behavior that your teachers expect in school.
  • Use the Chat box to ask for help or give needed information.

Study Zone Tutors

Homework help is available in all subjects for grades K-5 on every shift. Tutors can provide language support for homework or translation in many languages. Individual or small group, up to 3 students with a tutor.

Available Tutor Languages and Advanced Subjects

Reading Buddies

Volunteers help students practice reading out loud. Reading Buddies have access to OverDrive ebooks to share on screen. The book selection changes every two weeks.

Reading Buddies can focus on:

  • Pronunciation and pacing as students read
  • Reading and conversation for English language learners
  • Reading comprehension

Study Zone Plus reading levels:

Level 1: Readers recognize letter sounds and can sound out shorter words. They may read slowly and sound out most words. Books contain easy words, simple sentences and lots of pictures.

Level 2: Readers can sound out most words with little help. Books contain more text and more complex sentences, but still plenty of pictures.

Level 3: Readers are fluent readers and sound out complex words with little help. They are reading books with more dense text, complex sentences and fewer pictures.

For students in grades K-5. Focused support for 1-2 students, paired by reading level. Students may be limited to 30 minutes when other students are waiting.

Math Club

Volunteers give a 1-hour lesson each week to help students in grades K-8 practice core math skills. Lessons are separated into daily topics by grade levels. Directed math instruction for 1-20 students in a group. See the Math Club schedule for daily topics.

Talk Time & Recharge Rooms

Activities for students to recharge and chat. All students are welcome to participate on screen or on paper at home. ELL students can practice English conversation in a supportive and fun setting. Activities are separated for elementary students and teens.
